Boston Consulting Group ‘Business Strategy Competition’

Two Monash GSB teams recently competed in the Victorian championship stage of the 15th annual Boston Consulting Group's 'Business Strategy Competition'. Conducted on August 4 2006, the competition was hosted by the Monash GSB at Caulfield campus.

The competition is a strategy / case based idea sponsored by the Boston Consulting Group and conducted nationally by the University of NSW. Teams of 4-6 students are provided with a case prepared by the BCG and given 3 hours to prepare a recommendation. Each team is then given 10 minutes to present their case and a further 10 minutes of Q&A.

Monash entered teams for both divisions - undergraduate and postgraduate - to compete against the University of Melbourne (including the Melbourne Business School), RMIT, Swinburne and Deakin. The Monash teams performed very well (under great pressure) but ultimately finished third in their respective categories.

In the postgraduate competition, our team consisted of:

  • Kanthi Flynn (MBA)
  • Marigo Raftopoulos (MBA)
  • Abid Hasan (MBA)
  • Tobias Elbert (Master of Applied Econometrics).

Our undergraduate team comprised:

  • Nikki Miller (Arts/Commerce)
  • Karl Beston (Bachelor of Commerce)
  • Steve Whately (Arts/Commerce)
  • Aaron Bhardwaj (Arts/Commerce)
  • Josh Newton (Arts/Science)

After the final presentation, judges from the Boston Consulting Group praised the excellent performances given by all teams. Winning, runners-up and participant certificates were then awarded. The successful day was rounded off with a cocktail party attended by approximately 70 people.
