Monash MBA Alumni and Student ForumWednesday July 11, 2012 Location: MBA Centre, Level 3, Building N, Caulfield Campus Presented by: Professor Gerard Hodgkinson (Professor of Strategic marketing and Behavioural Science, Warwick Business School, The University of Warwick) Topic: Behavioural Strategy: Past, present and future “Behavioral strategy applies cognitive and social psychology to strategic management theory and practice” (Powell et al, 2011, Strategic Management Journal, p. 1369). In 1987 I was privileged to join a selective gathering at Boston University of a number of the world’s leading strategic management researchers. This event was seminal in my own development as a scholar and in the development of the now mushrooming wider body of work exploring the psychological foundations of the field. In this talk, I will reflect on what this work has accomplished thus far and explore what might lie ahead. Drawing on recent advances at the interfaces of economics, psychology, and neuroscience, I will demonstrate how and why a fundamental rethink is required, in order to move the strategy field away from a preoccupation with behavioural and cognitive aspects of strategy formulation and implementation, to a broader approach that accommodates the mounting evidence that less deliberative forms of cognition and emotion are central to the functioning of all individuals and groups. I will conclude by illustrating the implications of my analysis for the longer term development of work that will ultimately enhance the prospects of enterprises being able to adapt successfully at what is undoubtedly a critical juncture in the development of the world economy.
